A review from the Barnes & Noble Web site by Melinda Osteen:

Just when you think you've exhausted all leads in solving the mystery of Hypothyroidism, when you feel all hope is lost, Dr. Alan Christianson shines light into the darkness.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Thyroid Disease is a life-changing work. If you are suffering from a thyroid disorder, or have someone special in your life who is afflicted, this is a critical read for you.

It's been almost seven years since I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and approximately four since my tests came back positive for the autoimmune disease Hashimoto's. Since the beginning, I've spent countless hours researching my condition. I've read dozens of books on the subject. Unfortunately, many of the books simply recycle information from other texts. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Thyroid Disease is different. It is so incredibly detailed in the wealth of information it provides, yet reads like a great novel. Hy Bender has done an outstanding job incorporating humor as well as effortlessly tying together the medical jargon provided by an expert in the field, Dr. Alan Christianson.

I have this book on the home page of my Nook and I refer to it continuously throughout the week. It's extremely easy to navigate and provides actual solutions to symptoms. I now understand how fiber works to aid in weight loss and how those with hypothyroidism can benefit so much more with this essential supplement. This was a key to the door of health that I never knew existed; and there are many more keys to the doors of endless possibility within this book.

Recently I had the opportunity to network, if you will, with Hy Bender via a social networking site page dedicated to this book. It's been a wonderful tool for me as I work to optimize my medication. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Thyroid Disease has prompted further discussion on the fight to live a fantastic life despite being hypothyroid. When you post a question, Hy Bender responds almost immediately. If your inquiry is one he cannot answer himself (and believe me, he too is an expert on thyroid disorders as he is also a patient), he'll pass it along to Dr. Christianson and the response is always quick to come. I have recommended The Complete Idiot's Guide to Thyroid Disease to several friends; they've purchased the book and love it as much as I do! I guess what I really want people reading this review to understand is that Dr. Alan Christianson and Hy Bender aren't just two guys out to make a buck. The information they provide is invaluable. The empathy they project is genuine. Angels on earth? Oh yes, I believe they are.

WOW. Thank you both so much for this. My husband has hyperthyroidism. He found out because he had a wonderful doctor who wouldn't quit until he had a diagnosis. I don't have that doctor; and the doctors at the hospital were trying to tell me I was just having anxiety attacks. I am so grateful to you both for writing this book and helping us to take control of our healthcare. Your book states that if you have six or more symptoms there's a good chance your thyroid is ailing. I have 22 of those symptoms. I figure if the doctors won't test me, then I'll get it done myself. Thank you so much for providing that information.

This book is terrific. I found out so much about my thyroid and why I have been feeling the way I do. This book has a ton of information, obviously told by an authority on the subject and a writer with a real way with words. Thank you, thank you, thank you for making this truly easy to understand. I now realize the role of my thyroid in my health and what I need to do to get it back on track.

I've had thyroid problems for years, with my nails getting brittle, my dry skin, my hair falling out, plus the weight gain. Now I finally understand what is happening and I can get some answers! I feel empowered and ready to approach my doctor about my condition, the tests I want run, and even the kind of medication I want to try to get back in balance.

This book is easy to read, simple to understand, and answered more questions of concern for people I know who suffer from thyroid disease than I originally thought I had. Symptoms are clearly addressed as valuable suggestions to alleviate them, making it possible to have the symptoms subside or disappear. I especially noticed that thyroid disease is addressed from many different perspectives. I've gained a more thorough understanding and have greater responsibility around managing my own health and well-being from a complete and total perspective. This is an asset for my library and a manual that I can reference for years to come.

For years my mother has suffered from hyperthyroidism and doing research on this topic and trying to understand it has been extremely complicated for us. It's a scary illness that affects her eyes and throat. This book has helped us to better understand her condition. The book uses simple language to explain the disease in concise sentences. It provides tips on proper dieting and how to handle moments where the body feels like it's about to shut down. It's an informative read if you or someone close to you suffers from this.

This book has been really eye-opening!

I have a question: Since thyroid disorders are inextricably linked to other endocrine problems, is there a resource available that lists the optimal ranges for other hormones (e.g., testosterone, estrogen, cortisol, etc.) and vitamins (e.g., D)?

The list for TSH, free T4, free T3, etc. was VERY VERY helpful!

I am LOVING the book. My favorite parts are the "Thyroidian Tips" and "Throat Quotes"!

I'm reading through the "Diet and Nutrition" section and taking a ton of notes! I found out the "diet plan" recommended by the specialist I had been seeing included as a staple something that is on the definite "Do Not Eat" list for my metabolic challenges with hypothyroidism. Unbelievable. Had I followed his advice, I shudder to think how bad my health would have deteriorated.

Thank you SOOOO much for your book: Dr. Christianson, for sharing your experiences with patients you've worked with; and Hy Bender, for your personal triumphs over hypothyroidism. This has become my favorite thyroid reference book—I own a dozen—and I'm sharing my discovery with similarly afflicted friends.
