Notable Gay-Themed Shows

FringeNYC has consistently been one of the strongest supporters of gay-themed theatre in the country. This year is no exception; there are numerous gay- and transgender-related productions, ranging from drama to comedy to the indescribable. The following are a few that either appear promising or have already received buzz:

2 Burn  Parker and Dizzy's Fabulous Journey to the End of the Rainbow

Gay-themed drama 2 Burn and musical Parker & Dizzy's Fabulous Journey to the End of the Rainbow

2 Burn :The official description: "Part gay noir and part meditation on memory and loss, 2 Burn centers on the relationship between Paul, a professor of English and theory, and Manny, an ambitious but struggling college student. Fresh from a bad breakup and stymied by writer's block, Paul turns to Manny for validation and companionship, becoming his lover as well as his tutor. Manny devours Paul's teachings, intent on mastering the power of words. But Manny has a secret, and its discovery ultimately leads both men to battle for control over language, sex, and each other."

Parker & Dizzy's Fabulous Journey to the End of the Rainbow: The official description: "If the The Wizard of Oz had a foursome with Star Wars, Thelma & Louise, and The Da Vinci Code, its offspring would be this hilarious musical adventure. Dead bodies! Drag queens! Clones! The gay holy grail! May the Fierce be with them." The show has been getting good buzz; the worst I've head so far is "At 2 hours and 20 minutes, it's about 10 minutes too long."

Dancing in the Garden: The official description: "Maria is having a crisis of faith. As a child, her life was a beautiful garden – and her garden had loving Italian-American parents, a doting family priest, the security of an embracing church and a rigid-but-comfortable Catholic upbringing. It isn't until she is a sophomore at St. Patrick's High and she kisses Susan Blakeman behind the curtains in the music room that her life begins to unravel. As she discovers the impossibility of reconciling her sexuality with her religion, she learns her garden has strict rules, and the exhilaration of dancing is not allowed. Even knowing she is incapable of changing who she is, she refuses to abandon her faith, and she is paralyzed. Maria guides the audience back through her journey as a lesbian Catholic in hopes that if they share a similar pain, they may also discover a path, as she has, to tremendous joy."

The F*cking World According To Molly: There's a longer entry for this show under the Comedy section, but suffice to say the Village Voice's Michael Musto raves "She's a scream!" Check out videos by clicking here and here.
