Notable FringeNYC Gay-Themed Shows
FringeNYC has consistently been one of the strongest supporters of gay-themed theatre in the country. This year is no exception; there are numerous gay- and transgender-related productions, ranging from comedy to drama to the indescribable. The following are a few that I've either seen & loved or have received good buzz:
Chicago-based comedy
5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche is a **** must-see;
drama June
and Nancy is getting good buzz;
and one-man show Becoming
Butch has sold out all its performances before even opening
• 5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche: Developed from improvised scenes by its sharp Chicago cast, this New Colony production is one of FringeNYC's finest comedies ever, and a not-to-be-missed event. For my review, please click here.
•
June and Nancy:
I've heard good things about the script for this drama about two women in the
1950s who fall in love; plus it co-stars Gabrielle Maisels, whose phenomenal
performance at last year's FringeNYC resulted in the finest one-person show
of that festival (for my review of Bongani, please click here). This
sounds like a must-see; but I'll know more after catching its opening night on
8/17 at 8:15 pm..
• Becoming Butch: Selling out its entire run before even opening is this one-man show about "Vincent's coming-of-age through baseball, soap operas, and speech lessons in his journey to redefine the meaning of becoming butch." Please stay tuned to this site for news about any added performances.
